Mumbai, Dec 2024 – Mumbai University has introduced new guidelines for twinning, dual degree, and joint degree programs. These updates aim to expand educational opportunities and foster collaborations among affiliated colleges starting next academic year.
New Opportunities for Students
The university’s academic council approved these guidelines to allow affiliated colleges and Mumbai University to work together more effectively. This collaboration will offer students a variety of new program options.
Dual Degree Options
Under the new guidelines, Mumbai University will offer dual degrees through the Centre for Distance and Online Education. Affiliated colleges can now collaborate to provide dual degrees in different modes:
- Both Degrees Online: Students can pursue two degrees entirely through distance or online learning.
- One Physical and One Online: Students can combine a traditional degree with an online degree.
- Both Degrees Physical: Students can earn two degrees simultaneously in physical mode, provided the collaborating colleges are within 5-20 km of each other and have a memorandum of understanding (MoU) approved by the university.
Collaboration with Other Institutions
Affiliated colleges can now partner with other Mumbai University colleges or even international universities to offer joint and twinning degrees. To collaborate with international institutions, partners must be ranked within the top 1000 in QS rankings. For Indian institutions, partners must be in the top 100 in NIRF rankings and hold a NAAC grade of A.
Existing Partnerships
Mumbai University has already partnered with St. Louis University and Moscow University to offer joint degrees. Additionally, twinning programs with a French and an Italian university are in place. More collaborations are expected soon.
Ensuring Quality and Standards
Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni emphasized that participating institutions must ensure there is no overlap of credits or courses. All collaborations require university approval to maintain high educational standards.
Enhancing Faculty Expertise
The new guidelines also include a UGC scheme allowing professors to practice in different departments and affiliated colleges. This initiative aims to bring industry experts into the academic environment, enhancing the quality of education.
Annual Policy Review
Mumbai University will review these policies annually to ensure they meet educational standards and address any emerging needs.
