Nalanda Open University (NOU) is taking a significant step to enhance higher education in Bihar. It will introduce 10 new postgraduate (PG) courses for the 2025-26 academic year. This move follows approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC), making it a major development for students across the state.
New Courses to Meet Growing Demand
The new PG programs cover a wide range of subjects. These include:
- Sanskrit
- Urdu
- History
- Political Science
- Sociology
- Zoology
- Library Science
- Computer Applications
- Environmental Science
- Journalism in Mass Communication
With these additions, NOU will offer 26 postgraduate courses in total. This increase will help provide high-quality, accessible education to more students.
Expanding Opportunities for Students
Prof. Sanjoy Kumar, the Vice Chancellor of NOU, explains that these new courses are part of the university’s goal to make education more accessible. By offering diverse subjects, NOU aims to meet the educational needs of students both in Bihar and beyond. Currently, NOU offers 59 undergraduate courses and 46 certificate and diploma programs. These additions will strengthen its academic offerings and attract more students.
The new PG programs will provide flexibility for students. They can continue their studies through distance learning. This is especially helpful for those unable to attend traditional on-campus universities. Students can pursue their education from home, making it easier for those balancing work or family commitments.
NOU’s Role in Bihar’s Education Landscape
Distance learning is gaining popularity, and NOU is leading the way in Bihar. The new PG courses will help shape the future of education in the state, offering valuable qualifications across various fields.
NOU has already educated over 10 lakh students through distance learning. By expanding its PG programs, NOU continues to lead in distance education. This expansion offers more opportunities for students to gain the skills needed for successful careers.
A Modern Campus to Support Growth
In addition to expanding its academic offerings, NOU recently moved to a new campus in Baragaon, Nalanda. The modern campus, built at a cost of Rs 121 crore, spans 10 acres and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The new infrastructure is designed to support the growing student body and improve the quality of learning.
The new campus, inaugurated in August 2023 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is a step toward modernizing NOU. It will be a central hub for distance education in Bihar. The campus provides a comfortable and advanced environment, helping students thrive as they pursue their academic goals.
