Patna: Nalanda Open University (NOU) is bringing significant changes to Bihar’s education landscape. For over 37 years, it has provided distance learning opportunities to students in rural and underprivileged areas. The university now plans to introduce job-focused courses tailored to the needs of the state’s youth. It will also emphasize high-quality research for students and faculty.
Ravindra Kumar, the new Vice-Chancellor (VC), outlined these transformative steps. Recently, the university received a Rs 20 crore grant under the Prime Minister Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) program. This fund will improve infrastructure and support research projects. An education ministry team is expected to visit the university soon to evaluate these initiatives.
Efforts to Regain Recognition and Update Programs
One of the university’s priorities is restoring recognition for its undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses. These programs were de-recognized in the past due to various shortcomings. To address this, NOU has been preparing self-learning materials (SLM) in line with the four-year undergraduate model under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The first two semesters of SLM for UG courses will be available on the university’s website by mid-February. This step is crucial to secure approval from the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) for the current academic session. Additionally, a committee of experts will review the newly designed courses. Following validation, the chancellor will approve the programs based on recommendations from the Bihar State Higher Education Council.
Improving Teaching and Research Standards
The university is working to enhance its academic quality, particularly after receiving a Grade-C rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Measures include increasing online classes and providing financial assistance to researchers. NOU is setting up a corpus fund of Rs 1-2 crore to support research on socially relevant issues.
Addressing Financial Concerns
Since its establishment in 1987, the university has operated solely on internal resources without seeking government funding. However, rising financial demands have prompted a change. The VC recently met with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who assured support for NOU. This move will help the university sustain its academic activities and expand its reach.
Increasing Enrollment in Higher Education
By introducing new programs and upgrading infrastructure, NOU aims to attract more students. These efforts will contribute to a higher enrollment ratio in Bihar’s higher education system. The university’s initiatives mark a step forward in empowering young learners and strengthening the state’s academic foundation.
