The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed its free online course in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The five-day program, conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), aimed to equip participants with foundational knowledge in AI and ML.
Course Overview
The course took place from August 19 to August 23, 2024. It was designed to introduce the basics of AI and ML, focusing on their applications in geospatial technologies. The program catered to professionals, students, and researchers interested in fields such as civil engineering, computer science, data analytics, geoinformatics, and geomatics.
Eligibility and Registration
The course was open to:
- Professionals seeking to understand AI, ML, and Deep Learning (DL)
- Students and researchers in relevant technical fields
There was no fee for the course, but seats were limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested individuals were encouraged to register early to secure their spots.
Course Content
Participants explored a comprehensive curriculum that included:
- Introduction to AI, ML, and DL
- Machine learning methods: supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning
- Advanced deep learning techniques such as CNN, RNN, R-CNN, Faster RCNN, SSD, and YOLO
The course also featured practical sessions using Google Earth Engine and Python programming for developing machine and deep learning models. All study materials, including lecture slides, video recordings, and handouts, were accessible on the eClass platform.
Daily Schedule
- August 19: Introduction to AI/ML and DL by Dr. Poonam Seth Tiwari (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
- August 20: Methods in Machine Learning by Dr. Hina Pande (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
- August 21: Deep Learning Concepts by Dr. Poonam Seth Tiwari (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
- August 22: Machine Learning Through Google Earth Engine by Dr. Kamal Pandey (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
- August 23: Python for Machine/Deep Learning Models by Ravi Bhandari (4:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
Certification
Participants who attended at least 70% of the sessions received a ‘Course Participation Certificate.’ Certificates were available for download from the ISRO Learning Management System (LMS) upon successful completion of the course.
About the Program
This online course was part of the IIRS Outreach Programme, which has significantly expanded since its inception in 2007. Initially launched with 12 universities and institutions, the program now includes over 3,500 network institutes. These institutions span central and state universities, private academic institutions, government departments, forest resource professionals, research institutes, geospatial industries, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Conclusion
ISRO’s free AI and ML course provided a valuable opportunity for professionals and students to enhance their skills in these advanced technologies. By participating, individuals contributed to the growth and innovation within India’s space and geospatial sectors.
